It seems like John Dwyer would do it on a whim? But others say it loosely correlates with band lineup changes. This person on Reddit from a few years back had a good, in depth explanation! I personally figured the band did it to fuck with people haha
on top of what other people have said: it's all the same band, as far as their music goes, with John Dwyer being the only constant. the main songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist. it seems to me like he changes the name whenever there's a change in the lineup, and/or when their style changes a l on top of what other people have said: it's all the same band, as far as their music goes, with John Dwyer being the only constant. the main songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist. it seems to me like he changes the name whenever there's a change in the lineup, and/or when their style changes a little bit. started as The Oh Sees: put out a couple of pretty straight forward garage rock/punky albums then where Thee Oh Sees - this was their name for almost 10 years, and is their most commonly used name when people refer to them. most of their stuff under this name was still rooted in garage rock, but became a bit more experimental and psychedelic rock. this style (primarily their earlier records with this name - 2008-2011) is what a lot of people consider to be King Gizzard's biggest, or at least most obvious influence. John Dwyer did the patented Stu Mackenzie "WOOO!"'s, the deep-throating of the microphone, and a couple of the other moves and stage antics while performing live.. for this reason, a lot of people think Gizz ripped off their style in the early days. there's absolutely some clear similarities in Willoughby's Beach and 12BB, but beyond that, Gizz has progressed and evolved their sound way beyond that, and are way more diverse than Oh Sees will ever be, although they are definitely not one to shy away from experimenting with different styles as well. they released a fun little acoustic album titled Memory Of A Cut Off Head in 2017 under the name OCS, which actually was the original name John used for a couple of little solo projects in 2003-2005, before he started The Oh Sees. i haven't listened but they're described as "experimental freak folk." changed to Oh Sees in 2017 - i could be wrong but i think this is when they added a 2nd drummer, someone correct me if it was before then. the albums "Orc," "Smote Reverser," and "Face Stabber" released under this name continued the expansion of their psych rock sound, but with a bit of a heavier tone. not quite metal, but definitely sharing some characteristics of metal, and pretty focused on Krautrock - steady, mesmerizing, and droney grooves, rolling basslines. when you hear people talk about the "rhythm section holding it down," imagine them holding it down to the 10th degree.. it's usually super repetitive, but the grooves are just so addicting that it doesn't matter, or you don't even notice that it's repetitive. there's usually quite a bit happening on top of it too, so that helps. i've seen a lot of people refer to Orc as one of their best albums, and i think personally this is my favorite phase of the band. Face Stabber came out around the same time as Rats' Nest, and i haven't given it the proper listen(s) yet, partially because it's 80 minutes long.. but from what i have heard, i feel like it could be one of, if not their best album. or at least the pinnacle of that style for them then just a couple months ago they changed to just Osees.. put out a (really good) album called Protean Threat last month, and since then, they've been releasing and announcing new albums/EP's what seems like every other day. "Metamorphosed" is (i believe) B-sides from Protean Threat. it's only 5 songs, but 43 minutes long.. haven't listened to it yet. then they have an album called "Panther Rotate" coming out before the end of the year, from what i recall, it's a bunch of not necessarily B-sides, but a collection of weird jams/experiments from the Protean Threat sessions. someone correct me if i've got the descriptions of those albums wrong, but i believe that's accurate. oh yeah and they put out an experimental electronic album called The 12" Synth as Oh Sees in 2019 - might just have been a solo project by John - 2 songs, 40 minutes. kinda similar to those intermission/filler tracks that Stu made for Chunky Shrapnel.. Anamnesis & Quarantine. and in the amount of time it took me to write this up, they've probably announced another album.
