Leaves drifted lazily through the crisp autumn air, swirling in slow motion as the late-day sun flickered across the grass. The world smelled different here, richer, fuller, alive with the scent of soil and bark and something faintly sweet in the breeze. The cool wind rippled through his coat as he lunged for the bright orange ball, paws sinking into the soft earth with a gentle thud. Every colour seemed deeper. Every sound, sharper. Even his heartbeat felt steadier, tuned to something simple and right.

He didn’t question why it all felt so natural. It just did. The laugh behind him made his ears twitch, and warmth rushed through his chest, spreading down to the wag that seemed to move of its own accord. The ball flew again, and his world became motion itself, sunlight, joy, breath, and grass. Something about it all felt familiar to Jerry, like he’d been waiting his whole life for this. Because, in truth, he always had. After all… 𝘩𝘦’𝘥 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘢 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘥𝘰𝘨. 😉

After a long struggle, his tail finally won the battle with his pants, tearing the garment to shreds. A proud mixed-brown tail wagged high above his fuzzy rear as the dog-boy’s muzzle gnashed happily into the pile of kibble, sending crumbs flying from his favorite bowl. His human always said it was his favorite bowl.

The couch continued to compress under him, its top reshaping into a light, fuzzy white texture—losing its form and becoming a soft, uniform dog bed. On the human table, his bhone lost its nuance as well, now adopting the simple white plastic form of a classic chew toy—the same design that circled Jerry’s bowl. Jerry liked eating from Jerry’s favorite bowl.

The fur continued across his body, and each inch of growth sent euphoric shivers across Jerry’s mind. His paws tapped idly at the floor, the sensation of his thickening pads pressing against the rug too satisfying to ignore. For Jerry, it was the simple pleasures that mattered now. Like this kibble. This kibble from his favorite bowl was the best thing.

His flat tongue played with the food pile, eager to scoop as much of it as possible into his snout. His head tilted at the sound. Keys. Owner. It was owner. Owner was home.

Jerry sprawled himself across the couch, finally enjoying some time to himself after the most hectic week he’d had in a long time. It was nice to finally take some time to do nothing in his empty apartment—leaving his phone on the nearby table and just munching on snacks, savoring each bite as he mindlessly fished for the next nicest chip in the big round bowl he had filled up. This was nice—meditative, almost. In a passing thought, he wondered if this was what it felt like for a pet to be left home alone, just existing in a comfortable space.

Then it hit him—or rather, brushed against his fingers. The sensation of some foreign, round objects mixed among the chips made his arm lurch backwards, his other fist gripping the chips in hand with a brutal force. The big bowl he’d been eating from fell off the couch to the floor, but he couldn’t tell in the moment if it had been knocked by his motion, or if it was simply moving itself to a more correct position. Either way, the bowl now held a strange new energy, marked with a ring of bones around its circumference as it tumbled from the couch and out of Jerry’s vision.

Jerry shifted uncomfortably in his shirt, which was tightening around the collar and fizzling out of reality everywhere else, flaking away like dust in the wind. The exposed skin was now tickled by sprouts of dark brown and patchy white fur. His nose had begun to tingle, and looking down, he could see why: it was discolored, and bulging into his field of vision. His ears, too, felt a tingling pull—and he could only imagine a similar, putty-like stretching was happening to them.

As he adjusted his shifting center of weight on the cushion, his mind didn’t trigger any panic or fear. Instead, he remained focused on the bowl, now flattened against the floor. The entire contents had transformed into a pile of brown, dry kibble. Yet the sight didn’t deter Jerry’s attention. In fact, the aroma wafted heavily into his darkening, puffing nose, distracting him from noticing how his arms and legs were being overtaken by fur and his fingertips tipped with thickening claws.

The excitement of digging in spun around his restructuring mind, and his twitching tail certainly showed that. It tugged and whipped against his constrictive pants, struggling against the fabric and bunching up, tickling his rear with more and more fur as each growth spurt hit it. Jerry began to place his front legs at the edge of the couch, moving toward the floor-bound bowl with a curious eagerness. His mouth stayed slightly open, his dopey smile stretching across his face to match the long muzzle now forming around it. Saliva pooled in his mouth with every canine sniff, and his solidified collar—now marked “Jerry”— jingled as he placed his front paws on either side of the dish.

At this height, he couldn’t see his phone anymore. It had started pinching inward, reshaping itself safely out of reach—unless his roomate-ner… roomawner… his… owner? got it for him. But it didn’t matter right now. It was time for food.
