Akseli Gallen-Kallela and his family spent the summer of 1905 by Lake Keitele in Konginkangas, in Middle Finland. The far looming island can be seen as one variation from the theme 'island of dreams,' a familiar subject in the history of art.

Individual posts will continue, but chuffed that I’ve reached the goal of 100 daily dicks!
I want to continue to 365 - is that something people would want to see?

The Tunnocks Tiger, by David and Robert Mach.

Every stripe made out of Tunnocks tea cake wrappers. Now and then I'm reminded this thing exists, and I have to just sit and stare at it for a while.

'Pond water crowfoot.' (1895) Eero Järnefelt was christened Erik but Finnicised his name to Eero, just as his fellow artist Axel Gallén later renamed himself Akseli Gallen-Kallela. This work, painted near Koli in eastern Finland, shows a strong influence from Japanese prints.

My favourite painting by Wilhelm Holter. The majesty of this work from 1904, comes from the deep, pearl-like iridescence of the walls, the illumination of the gilt picture frames, the reflections from the floor and the furniture; all from a single light source.

This is among a group of powerful seascapes made by Leon Spilliaert in the 1920s, works in which the sea sometimes takes on an almost abstract quality and shows his interest in light effects and nuances of colour, with a human presence signified only by distant yacht.

'The Courtyard.' (1905) Vilhelm Hammershøi’s interest in isolation is powerfully articulated in this work which shows the exterior of his house in Strandgade 30, the oldest part of Copenhagen. He painted in a room so deep that even in summer, it remained in subdued twilight.

Widely known as a mentor to Edward Hopper, Martin Lewis' hallmark as a printmaker was the use of tonalities to evoke atmosphere and light, his technical bravura shows in this superb watercolour of bi-planes flying over New York City in 1919.

I have a big ask. My 9yo son is autistic and he’s been raising a betta fish he named Kevin. Yesterday He asked if he could “share a photo of Kevin with the whole world“. I don’t know if this will work, but a dad’s gotta try. Like and share if that’s your thing. Kevin says hi! 🐟👋

'In the Restaurant,' (1907) is one of Charles Hoffbauer's most acclaimed works. It was painted in the ballroom at the then recently opened Hotel Astor in New York City. The picture was completed a few months after Hoffbauer's sixth appearance at the Paris Salon.

(1/3) It needs repeating: in 1994, Ukraine was persuaded to give up its nuclear weapons to Russia in return for the US, the UK, and Russia guaranteeing Ukraine’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.

Trump never had a peace plan for Ukraine. He had a plan for Ukraine's surrender, with a colonial resource grab. As Zelenskyy rightly refused it, or to cooperate in Trump's TV spectacular, the US has now cut Ukraine off.
That's what blackmail looks like.
That's what the world is up against.

James Hamilton Hay had a passion for Japanese colour prints and this influence is reflected in the decorative nature of many of his works including this beautifully gas lit, Whistlerian work, 'The Golden Blinds,' from 1909.

'Lighting Up.' (c1960) Leslie Worth was one of Britain's finest watercolourists despite never having had a lesson in watercolour at any of the three colleges of art where he studied - rooted largely in the native Romantic traditions, he produced wonderfully quirky pieces of work.
