Historian and Lecturer. US History. Race and Memory. Current project: Mourning at the Museum
When I was 14, my dad drove me and my older brother from Durham to Leeds for my first gig.

30 years later (almost to the day), I got to see them on-stage again. Incredible.

This little creature landed on my parents' window... Looks kind of weird... And then I zoomed in...

North-east of England is best region in Great Britain for allotments, report finds www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...
But none of the photos are of the northeast - even though Durham is home to allotments with one of the best views in the country.

So much fun going with my fellow museum nerds to see the Museum of Communism in Prague. A little @memstudiesassoc.bsky.social Musems and Working group trip in the middle of #MSAPrague25

And then this evening, I saw the author, Georgi Gospodinov give the keynote talk at #MSAPrague25
@memstudiesassoc.bsky.social in the beautiful surroundings of the Obecní Dům.

Yesterday, I bought this book from a lovely little bookshop round the corner from the conference venue. I didn't recognise the name of the author but thought it sounded interesting...

Always nice when the reading stage of a new project coincides with a spell of good weather.

6 years of research, 3 years of writing (including 2 blissful years of Leverhulme fellowship), 115,000 words later... The full draft manuscript is submitted!

Great day at AHRC M4C workshop on Places and Placemaking. Love being in a room full of PhD students, who are so articulate about their fascinating projects. Delighted to have given the keynote on memorialising and mourning at US plantations.

Can any #skystorians please recommend reading on ACT-UP's use of die-ins as protest during the AIDS crisis?

We went to Nanaimo last summer - it's a lovely place! We had a delicious brunch, crepes, and (Nanaimo bar) ice cream. And fantastic whale watching too, of course!

Just did my Storygraph 2024 reading wrap. First year of using the app and I love it. Great for someone like me who, whenever any asks for recs, can't remember what they've just read. 😂

Don't think I've ever had my drink served to me in a Christmas bauble before!

Top artists = the last few months of my research leave. This is what I listen to when I'm writing.
Can't imagine many other people have Alaskan Tapes as their top artist 😂
Plus TS - an 11 year old in the car, and me trying to learn lyrics for the Eras Tour at Wembley 😍

Yep. Grim. There has been some pushback but you can still get married at plenty of plantations, including Destrehan.
An "enchanting setting" for your wedding day, apparently.

Wonder what "chilling stories" are being told about these enslaved rebels who fought for their freedom.

Going to have to add a footnote to my chapter on ghost tours and death at southern plantations to include Destrehan.

What could be more festive than meeting Santa under the oak tree where dozens of enslaved people were sentenced to death for trying to throw off the shackles of their bondage. (Many of the enslaved people executed were decapitated and their heads were displayed on poles along the Mississippi river)

Glinda's dress in Wicked reminded me of one of my Flower Fairy dolls from the 80s!

A bit more context for my query... I'm thinking esp about practice of leaving coins and money. At Mount Vernon people leave money at the enslaved burial ground, for example. Visitors also leave coins at memorial at Whitney plantation.

Proper snow at my parents' house in Co. Durham. My dad going out to get the paper this morning.
