@mrjamesob.bsky.social About teaching children why Pythagoras is useful- we used it to work out the dimensions of a bridge for the model railway and the pitch of a dolls’ house roof we were building. My son is a really good model maker now. 😋

@lizzicollinge.bsky.social As mother of a mixed-heritage child I was really cheered by Kier Starmer’s speech yesterday, and by its enthusiastic endorsement by his audience. Recently the national atmosphere has been very frightening at times, and a strong message from the top is very encouraging. 😊

@mrjamesob.bsky.social Hi James, I was at college with Danny Kruger as a postgrad. I was in charge of Christian Aid for two years and recall that he didn't show any visible inclination towards Christianity (or aid) whatsoever. Thought you might like to know that! All the best as ever.

@lbc.co.uk when I invigilated exams it would have been a disciplinary offence to stand up and disrupt other pupils when they need to focus. Anyone who did this would have been thrown out. Having a quiet word with the teacher would have sufficed. Calling out publicly looks like attention seeking.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social we were forbidden to play football at primary school in the 80s, and we had to sit inside sewing while the boys played. No reason given. When my favourite teacher at middle school let me play with the boys I realised that I had been missing one of the greatest pleasures ever.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social This lady’s term “rigor mortis stage fright” rings so true. I used to be an academic, but I stopped working in universities because before job interviews I’d be unable to eat for a week. I was criticised for “hesitating” and thinking for too long before answering questions.🙄

@mrjamesob.bsky.social Yesterday, my half-Japanese 16-year-old said “I think Starmer was talking about me. I don’t feel I’m allowed to be British”. I’m British; we came back here in 2016, and the xenophobic rhetoric is incessant. I’m terrified he’ll opt to return to Japan. It will break my heart.
