Delegated my memory to the internet long ago. Kindness is cool. Scotland's Library and Information Professional of the Year 2023. All views my own. She/her. Trans rights are human rights. Greatest achievement: using up an entire lip balm.

if WOC were barred it would be a white women's conference. if queer women were barred it would be a straight women's conference. if you bar any group of women from a women's conference, you do not have a women's conference, you have a conference of female people who are ok with prejudice.

Recommended @christinamartin.bsky.social Ashes To Admin on course yesterday on Burke and Hare, for engaging & humane info about managing deaths without next of kin. Another attendee recommended The Specimens by Mairi Kidd about B&Hs often forgotten victims. Yes, we have interesting tastes in books!😂

Again: the Purpose of LLM- type "AI" bullshit engines is not to tell you the truth or to lie to you, but to tell you something you are statistically determined to be more likely to accept, irrespective of facts— which makes them perfect for accelerating dis- & misinformation & persuasive propaganda…
AI dialogues shifted political support by 2 to 3 points in trials, eclipsing standard ads. Roughly one-third of this effect persisted for a month. However, models optimized for persuasion proved more factually error-prone.

AI chatbots can persuade voters to change their minds
Conversations with AI can sway people’s political views. Concerningly, a chatbot’s facts are not always accurate, especially when it supports right-wing positions.

The Women's Institute has been forced into excluding trans women too

Gender criticals: "Listen to women! Unless you're Girlguides or the Women's Institute or you disagree with the male judge who wrote this decision or if you don't 'look like a woman' or if you're a trans man because then you're definitely a man."

Everyone will suffer from this madness. Everyone.

The 'video' evidence is so hilariously bad. But...as AI image generation improves are courts in future only going to be able to accept testimony from witnesses that are actually in the courtroom? This is just going to lead to more stressful court experiences.

Ummmm... CILIP Local Studies Group, if things have been a bit quiet on the contact front recently, it may be because your contact information isn't working on the link here? Looks like it redirects to a defunct blog link.

"Oh, you must love reading. Do you get to read lots of books at work?"

No, my job isn't about reading, it's about information.

And if you think that reading textbooks and case law about all the utterly horrific things humans can do to other humans is fun reading, I got some worries about you....
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!
