This small bronze figurine of a naked Gaulish woman projects great vulnerability - which was certainly the point, but not in a good way. She's identified by her torc and represents the eroticization of a conquered people. 🏺

Small bronze figurine of a naked woman - a girl, really - sitting on the ground, mostly on her left thigh, as her legs are pulled back. She has her right hand on her right ankle, and her head is turned to her left and slightly upwards; her left hand is on the ground. This pose creates a great tension in the work. She wears a large torc around her neck, with bulbous terminals, and a bracelet on each wrist (which may have been gilded, as well as the torc). The bronze surface is heavily corroded from centuries in the river. A very affecting portrait of a conquered Gaulish woman. British Museum, London (1867,0508.748)

Just started Richard Zenith's translation/edit of Fernando Pessoa's THE BOOK OF DISQUIET and it has what might be my new favorite opening paragraph of a book ever:
I. I was born in a time when the majority of young people had lost faith in God, for the same reason their elders had believed in God without knowing why. And since the human spirit natur- ally tends to make judgements based on feeling instead of reason, most of these young people chose Humanity to replace God. I, however, am the sort of person who is always on the fringe of what he belongs to, seeing not only the multitude he's a part of but also the wide open spaces around it. That's why I didn't give up God completely as they did, and I never accepted Hum- as anity. I reasoned that God, while improbable, might exist, in which case he should be worshipped; whereas Humanity, being a mere biological idea and signifying nothing more than the animal species we belong to, was no more deserving of worship than any other animal species. The cult of Humanity, with its rites of Freedom and Equality, always struck me as a revival of those ancient cults in which animals were treated as gods, or the gods had animal heads.
