So following the message of St. Nicholas is about more than presents for your loved ones or immediate community. It's about identifying systemic injustice and being willing to fight for it, and examine the role your own privilege has played.

St. Nicholas existed on both sides of privilege and discrimination. He knew wealth and acceptance; he knew disenfranchisment and persecution. Regardless of what side he was on, legends say he used what resources he had to help others - and even get into fistfights with other bishops. 4/

But he also decided to convert and become a priest during a time of Christian persecution. He was imprisoned for his faith. When he was released, Christianity was a recognized religion, which allowed him to become a bishop in a growing institution. 3/
