In late November, when Adam Lambert talked to me, very thoughtfully, about playing the Emcee in “Cabaret,” he spoke about trying to guide the audience through “If You Could See Her.” He also mentioned that the audience’s drinking is a factor in their response.

Here’s a chunk I left out, for space.
A long quote from Adam Lambert: It’s a permissive environment, having the bars and the pre-show, and it’s called the Club and people drink, and they’re encouraged to. Sometimes you get into Act II and they’re a little, there are some rowdy patrons who aren’t paying attention. And sometimes you get somebody just laughing because they see someone in a gorilla costume and they’re not paying attention. And so there was one night where a woman laughed really, really loud and she was right down the front with me and she was just laughing and laughing and not listening to me. And I stopped on that. I said, “wouldn’t look Jewish.” And she went, “Ah-ha-ha!” And I stopped and I looked at her and I went, “Hah-hah-hah-hah!” And then I stared at her, and the audience fell really silent. I said, “She wouldn’t look Jewish at all.” And I kept staring at her. And it was, it’s confrontational. And I’m a nice guy. I don’t like confrontation. I don’t like making people feel uncomfortable. But that’s the point of the scene. The scene is to make you feel uncomfortable, especially that moment in the scene. And so I thought, well, I feel justified that if someone laughs, I should stare at them. And make them think for a minute: “Wait. Oh, am I not supposed to be laughing?” It is a lesson in the song. There’s a lesson in it: Don’t be complicit. Don’t be ignorant. (snaps) Pay attention. (snaps) Wake up. (snaps) That’s where we’re at. It’s so meta. It means so much more than just that moment. But that’s what the show is about. And it encapsulates that message.
