“We found there’s this perfect one-to-one relationship. If a city increased its road capacity by 10% then driving went up by 10%.” Still one of the best articles on why building bigger roads leads to more driving. Understanding “The Unbreakabke Law Of Congestion” aka #InducedDemand. Via @wired.com
What's Up With That: Building Bigger Roads Actually Makes Traffic Worse
The concept is called induced demand, which is economist-speak for when increasing the supply of something (like roads) makes people want that thing even more. Though some traffic engineers made note ...

After #SanDiego removed minimum parking mandates for homes near transit, “its density bonus program produced much more housing…more market-rate housing, more affordable housing in 100%-affordable buildings, and more affordable housing in mixed-income projects.”

Parking Requirements Are Not a Useful Bargaining Chip for Increasing Affordable Housing - Streetsblog California
Opponents of A.B. 1401 concede that parking requirements are bad policy, but worry that removing them will undermine affordable housing production. Evidence suggests that's not the case.

Kansas public health officials say the state's ongoing tuberculosis outbreak is the largest since the CDC started reporting TB cases in the 1950s.

The demographic most responsible for Trump's return are landowning liberals who have been opposing zoning reform and affordable housing developments in their cities.

You cannot be a progressive and believe that your home value or parking inconveniences are more important than housing families

My take @thenation on how economists’ dismissal of inflation worries contributed to Harris losing the election.

If we're handing out CEQA and Coastal Act exemptions for homebuilding in the event of an emergency, maybe we should consider that virtually all of California is in a state of perpetual housing emergency.

Morally bankrupt
In Georgia, a mom facing eviction reached out to DFCS for help. They offered her nothing. Soon the agency took her kids away because of "inadequate housing."

The state then paid *$6,200 a month* to house her kids in foster care.

One of the most important and infuriating stories I read this year:
When Families Need Housing, Georgia Will Pay for Foster Care Rather Than Provide Assistance
In more than 700 cases over five years, Georgia reported inadequate housing as the sole reason for taking a child into foster care, a WABE and ProPublica analysis found. Advocates say it would be chea...

People forget that USA is blessed by geography. Being flanked by two big ass oceans tends to make invasion impractical.
