Qasim Rashid I've seen no corporate media outlet cover this: •Post 2024 polls showed that Harris campaigning with Cheney decreased enthusiasm for her by 7% •Post 2025 polls show that Mamdani running as an unapologetic progressive earned him 9% of MAGA voters who went for Trump in 2024 To be clear, I am not saying this is the only reason Harris lost or Mamdani won. I am saying clearly that Harris's strategy hurt her and Mamdani's opposite strategy helped him. The lesson Corporate Dems need to learn: American voters crave authenticity and consistency. This kind of work creates POLITICAL COVER for people (normies and politicos to peel away from the fash and do hard but necessary work to recreate the public sphere. It's THE LITERAL EMBODIMENT of liberal pluralism in the BODY POLITIC. If you want people to do hard things EN MASSE, you must support them when they show up in the MILLIONS to tell the ONE SPECIAL BOY to GTFO. So, shout-out to the winemoms in unicorn blow-ups with FUCK ICE posters in Waukegan or wherever. Gonna need you at the Home Depot tomorrow.

Rallies like this bring together multigenerational groups and the playfulness can help create enthusasim for big tent politics against the monoculture of fascism. In the literature, we call rallies like this "image events" because they help **focus media attention** on a major strain of ideological resistance that is big enough for lots of people to feel comfortable. They create IMAGES that FOCUS our ATTENTION and AFFECT to mobilize frequently. Notably: every single rally (including in the small towns) was bigger than the surrounding police force available. That kind of image event is VERY IMPORTANT if you're, I dunno, demonstrating social coherence AGAINST a fascist government and it's makeshift gestapo. And from image events, we get POLYSEMIC images that carry multiple forms of ideology into the present. Here, we have the convergence of Shepard Fairey's iconic HOPE poster for the Obama campaign with the frog icon from #NoKings. The is how you visually dismantle fascist iconography.

Katz who posted:h Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that's good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent. Dr Corrigan starts: In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport. Fun and play are often a part of social movements as the people trust the larger group to hold their values as the conflict with the state expands. The anti-WTO protests in Seattle in 1999 were full of folks dressed like loggerhead turtles and dolphins and stuff dancing to RATM. Very fun + serious. When the conflict expands in scale & scope, the good feelings help propel people to do hard things. Shitting on the public rallies is fucking dumb. It's also ahistorical and lacks any serious engagement with the history of social movement successes in the US. It's just trashy demobilization. The frogs (and unicorns and dinosaurs) will be defining ideographs of this period of struggle.

To be clear: Indivisible Oregon is not affiliated with this action. Our event planned with 50501 Portland Oregon and partner Indivisible groups — like the original No Kings march — will gather at the Battleship Oregon Memorial, with Grand Entry marches leading in. The ICE facility has repeatedly been a site of violent federal response, including tear gas and arrests of peaceful protesters. We've heard serious concerns from immigrant justice groups that demonstrations there may increase risks for the very communities we aim to protect. We're not telling anyone how to protest - but as organizers, we will not lead or endorse a march to the ICE facility. Our priority is keeping our community safe and unified. Who keeps us safe? We keep us safe.
