My new book, “Unsettled Ground: Reflections on Germany’s Attempts to Make Amends,” considers the country’s belated efforts to come to grips with the Holocaust. It’s a story of remembrance, responsibility and reconciliation. Read an excerpt and pre-order the book at my website, linked in my bio.

Fondly remembering Susan Stamberg, one of NPR's "founding mothers," who died today. Her retirement party last month gave us a chance to thank her personally for all that she did to make NPR so vital to so many. Truly, a great and enduring legend of journalism has passed. www.npr.org/2025/10/16/1...

Post-war Germans could have shunned responsibility for crimes committed before they were born. They instead created a flawed but powerful remembrance movement that sought to educate the country about painful and previously hidden truths. Here's my appreciation for @momentmagazine.bsky.social
In Praise of Germany’s Flawed ‘Culture of Remembrance’
I hope I’m not being naïve in thinking that what these memory activists accomplished endures and their dedication still inspires.
