Reading this book. It describes early 20th Century efforts of rich industrialists and accommodating government officials to keep the working class poor by breaking unions & using obscenity laws to restrict access to birth control & sustain the supply of workers. Can you imagine living through that?

I read this as an undergrad at the University of Oregon, and I thought "no, the Pacific NW would never secede from the U.S. and form a new country." Today, I think "no, the NW coast and the NE coast should both secede, and join Canada."

Wonder why the public is disproportionately concerned with youth crime? Maybe partly culture shock, but also because news media promote far more youth crime stories.

What I'm reading now. After reading a dozen books in the last year about how democracies slide into authoritarian dictatorship, we're actually watching it now in the U.S., so I needed relief. And, in a way, this book also helps me understand Trump and his followers.

Yes, firearm violence in the U.S. went up during the COVID years. But, next time someone tells you these have been the most violent years ever, tell them to read something.
