My dad "accepts me" but often reminds me that "monogamy is important no matter who you're attracted to" because bi girls are more likely to cheat. My girlfriend's mom "accepts her" but won't use her chosen name and only uses the right pronouns half the time. My pan friend's mom "accepts her" but still calls her girlfriend her "best friend" she "knows my friend will find the right boy someday" A gay guy I met in class has parents that "accept him" but when he said he was being bullied his sexuality said that "he should just be less public about it." None of us have been kicked out. We still talk to our parents. They give us food and clothes and help pay college tuition. They haven't threatened to kill us. They haven't actually killed us. They "accept us" But no they don't.

Here’s the problem with the do-nothing crowd now telling us what to do: while they spent their years watching Republicans illegitimately pack the Supreme Court, take away voting rights from people of color, and systematically chip away at the constitutional order, all the while they offered only a simple defense of norms and decorum — in a blind hope that one day soon Republicans would wake up to find their better angels. That got us exactly where we are today. The reckoning is here. And now that this culture of timidity is on full display, these same do-nothing Democrats want to blame our losses on the defense of black people, trans kids, and immigrants, instead of on their own lack of guts and gumption.

When people say that if a certain set of ideas were going to work, they would have worked by now, I wonder if they seriously believe that no one has ever had their past, present, or future ideas before. Because the whole "if that was going to work" argument could be applied to virtually anything. (Unless you've got something completely novel to offer, and if you do, please, I am eager to hear about it.) It's simply not true that if an idea or strategy were winnable, it would have won by now. When you are squaring off against giants, oppressors, people with infinitely more power and resources, you can have a great strategy, a great team, etc, and still fail. Again and again and again. There is no magical formula that makes winning a fight for liberation something other than a long shot. We don't fight wickedness or struggle for freedom and human dignity because there's some magical formula that will make victory inevitable. (If you do believe victory is inevitable, I respect your faith, but do not share it.) Personally, I am in the struggle because I live in this world, and endeavoring to make it better, to make it free, and to make life decent for everyday people is the only way forward that I can see. I don't want to live in this world, such as it is, so I live in the pursuit of making it otherwise. There is no perfect solution. There's no blueprint. There's struggle, and everything that we manage to make worthwhile along the way.

Who will stand up for our democracy? This question, fraught in even the most peaceful times, has only grown more pressing as our country approaches its 250th anniversary. Each passing day brings growing assaults on essential liberties like freedom of speech and due process. Meanwhile, our delicately assembled legal system faces a constant barrage of threats. Even as this issue reaches publication, the U.S. military has been deployed against peaceful protesters. We teeter on the brink of collapse into an authoritarian state. That is why, today, The Onion calls upon our lawmakers to sit back and do absolutely nothing. Members of Congress, now more than ever, our nation desperately needs your cowardice. Our republic is a birthright, an exceedingly rare treasure passed down from generation to generation of Americans. It was gained through hard years of bloody resistance and can too esasily be lost. Our Founding Fathers, in their abundant wisdom, understood that all it would take was men and women of little courage sitting in the corridors of power and taking zero action as this precious inheritance was stripped away -- and that is where we have finally arrived. Now is not the time for bravery or valor! This is the time for protecting your own hide and lining your pocket. Now is not the time for listening to your idiotic constituents drone on about what's happening to their precious democracy. This is the time for getting down on all fours and groveling. Now is not the time to say, "enough is enough," and have the tough conversations about resisting the ongoing assaults on American liberty. This is the time to let the wave of apathy and indifference roll over you as you think about getting a really nice renovation to your house in Kalorama. So stay with me here, but fun ballet fact: part of the reason you're supposed to start ballet young is so you stretch and hold your joint in certain ways regularly enough that your body grows different. You know how men who do ballet look only sort of muscular but then like lift a whole ass person? Their muscles are trained to lie flat like that for flexibility, they don't bulk up. Girl in your class who always stands in turnout? It's likely not just habit, her joints probably sit like that now. I started ballet when I was 6 and stopped after 3 years. I then took a break for 3 years, and came back and did jazz ballet (Which has most Of the same body mods but without turnout) and tap for another couple of years. And every physio who works on my body looks at my feet, hips and calves and goes "oh you danced". I was never even flexible enough to do the splits, but you best believe I stand in turnout. I never went en pointe, but I'm 95% sure tap is the reason my feet have random spasms if I don't take to them with a tennis ball once a week. When I said I wanted to be a dancer at 6 years old, adults took that to mean I'd want certain permanent alterations to my body. Unlike with young trans kids, no one was looking to make sure fully understood what I was getting into. And unlike with young trans kids, these changes weren't reversible when I changed my mind. There wasn't even a way to delay things to buy time (like puberty blockers), it was all or nothing. If I wanted to be a professional dancer, my normal ass joints were a ticking timebomb. So like ~cis opinion~ but I really don't have a lot of time for people getting feral about trans kids socially transitioning or going on blockers or even (when they're old enough for it be relevant) hrt. Me "identifying" as a dancer at 6 years old was more physically impactful and less informed than if a 6 year old changed their name and grew their hair. but you don't see any of the adults in my life getting accused of child abuse

The thing about the far right is that what has drawn them to those politics is the emotional thrill of being allowed to hate and abuse someone. There is no society they'd be happy in because their happiness is contingent on always being angry and cruel. They barely even pretend to have a vision for the world - maybe they loosely gesture at some kind of purified society, but even they know, deep down, that it's fantasy. It's all just a vehicle to loosely rationalize the quest for constant rage, to jeer at the suffering of others. You can't work with these people. Their politics are fundamentally unstable, antisocial, anti-human. They're hate junkies in the thrall of a permission structure that lets them indulge endlessly in their addiction; they'll burn everything down in their search for their next fix. When there aren't more convenient targets available, they'll turn on each other. Find any far-right space and a large portion of the discourse is idiots arguing about which other far-right idiots are secretly nonwhite, gay, Jewish, whatever. They need their fix.

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naïve. No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief. 1/ A thread to explain his plan and how we fight back. 2/ This week you will read many confused economists and political pundits who won't understand how the tariffs make economic sense. That's because they don't. They aren't designed as economic policy. The tariffs are simply a new, super dangerous political tool. 3/ You see, our founders created a President with limited and checked powers. They specifically put the power of spending and taxation in the hands of the legislature. Why? Because they watched how kings and despots used spending and taxes to control their subjects. 4/ British kings used taxation to reward loyalty and punish dissent. Our own revolution was spurred by the King's use of heavy taxation of the colonies to punish our push for self governance. The King's message was simple: stop protesting and I'll stop taxing. 5/ Trump knows that he can weaken (and maybe destroy) democracy by using spending and taxation in the same way. He is using access to government funds to bully universities, law firms and state and local governments into loyalty pledges. 6/ Healthy democracies rely on an independent legal profession to maintain the rule of law, independent universities to guard objective truth and provide forums for dissent to authority, and independent state/local government to counterbalance a powerful federal government. 7/ But the private sector also plays a role to protect democracy. Independent industry has power. The tariffs are Trump's tool to erode that independence. Now, one by one, every industry or company will need to pledge loyalty to Trump in order to get sanctions relief. 8/ What could Trump demand as part of a quiet loyalty pledge? Public shows of support from executives for all his economic policy. Contributions to his political efforts. Promises to police employees' support for his political opposition. 9/ The tariffs are DESIGNED to create economic hardship. Why? So that Trump has a straight face rationale for releasing them, business by business or industry by industry. As he adjusts or grants relief, it's a win-win: the economy improves and dissent disappears. 10/ And once Trump has the lawyers, colleges, and industry under his thumb, it becomes very hard for the opposition to have any viable space to maneuver. Trump didn't invent this strategy. It's the playbook for democratically elected leaders who want to stay in power forever. 11/ The tariffs aren't economic policy. They are political weapons. But as long as we see this clearly, we can stop him. Public mobilization is working. Today, a few Republicans joined Democrats to vote against one set of tariffs. The people still have the power.

Christians are more susceptible to conspiracy theories because they've been groomed to accept ideas w/o evidence. The threat conspiracy theorists pose to the health & wellbeing of our world today is precisely why atheists have been vocal about the dangers of faith for years.

You know the Alpha Wolf thing? And how the entire theory was based on the behaviors of frightened and unrelated captive wolves? And how we know now, that real wolves in a native pack don't act like that? But even though that's a well established fact at this point, some people will still insist that the alpha thing is natural law? This is exactly how it feels whenever anyone mentions prison abolition or a non-hierarchical society and inevitably someone starts fretting about how it's "human nature" to be greedy and violent and selfish. And how could society ever possibly function without a Leader threatening to put people in cages to make them behave? But that fear is based on an observation of the behaviors of desperate, disenfranchised humans with direly unmet needs, not our natural state. It isn't actually a statement on our nature at all; it is a statement on the conditions that we are in.
