I keep thinking about this. I knew Vector's existed since before Sonic 1, but looking back, I guess that explains why Espio was originally pitched as the star of Chaotix, he was the only new character! (Aside from Heavy and Bomb but they're a Fantasy Zone reference.)

The same goes for the 3DS and WiiU eShops. I assume GKCs downloading the stuff directly probably means they're somewhat more future proofed, at least on the level of redownloads. But maybe I'll know I'm wrong in 15 years, who knows.

You can't get anything new from the Wii Shop Channel, so it is discontinued in that way. However, you can still redownload stuff that you bought from there but deleted from your Wii for storage reasons so Nintendo keeps all the data around.

The Wii Shop channel redownload servers are still up so I'm sure that won't be *too* much of an issue for now. Besides, in 20 years, I'm sure there will be (cough) other methods as well instead of paying 150 something dollars for Pokemon ZA on Switch 2.
