it brought such a great sci-fi conceit to the table and explored it honestly, something that's rare in fanboy-centric franchise entertainment. That sincerity I think will be strained by the demands of serialized TV, but I'm hopeful...

A History of Violence is doing its own thing for sure, but it does sort have that Shane-esque quality of a man forced into doing the one thing he's vowed to put behind him to save his loved ones, but then in so doing obliterates his own reason for being. You save the frontier by killing it.
