(Well, until it got annihilated by her payment processor going bankrupt; the consequence of the 2018 FOSTA-SESTA Act is that sex workers must always be doing financial services innovation and it’s often rather high risk.)

Only one shop that does design research in Afghanistan, heh.

But for all she fled the industry (not Jan! the next agency), it turns out you can take the girl out of strategy but you cannot take strategy out of the girl.

Given that (probably) wasn’t the intent, I do somewhat wonder how these books end up published by multi-Nobel winning Fitzcarraldo, you know? It’s a lot of aura to place on a work of pretty slight ambition.

The ‘Get me home’ button in Citymapper is one of the greatest pieces of digital UX ever.

You feel it in your BONES.

Also much respect to Oliver Roeder for getting ~2500 words on sage grouse into the FT?

(The AI angle is the way.)

‘The project has united in opposition hunters, wildlife conservationists, environmentalists, academics, certain bureaucrats and Native American tribes, all keen to safeguard their holy places.’

These unlikely allegiances are one of my favourite things about the rural West.

People don’t get that the reason they feel poor is that their salary has stagnated for 17 years bc no growth — it’s not the tax they pay, which is in fact relatively low.

It doesn’t make sense from a traffic perspective: Teen Vogue’s March interview with Elon Musk’s estranged trans daughter Vivian Wilson was one of Condé Nast’s top-performing stories of the year.

But Anna Wintour didn’t want to hear the word ‘politics’:

Teen Vogue's Award-Winning Journalism Was Too Much Trouble for Condé Nast
The outlet just won recognition for speaking truth to power. Condé Nast responded by eliminating its entire politics staff and folding it into Vogue.

An American university would have cowed to state pressure as well – in their case Trump – but at least they’d know to be ashamed doing it.

This country really lacks a tradition of freedom of enquiry. Sheffield H. blithely saying they shut down this professor’s research because insurance?

Not even a peep about academic freedoms.

Just ‘This couldn’t possibly be venal because we were too incompetent to get many Chinese students anyway.’

‘Emails seen by the Guardian suggest commercial factors were a consideration in placing limits on Murphy’s work’ — with other UK academics reporting the same: mustn’t threaten the overseas student fees holding the entire UK university sector together!

Drones mean moving injured soldiers to safety has never been harder.

“In areas I’ve been working, they are not bringing anyone out by daylight, that’s for sure,” Duley said.

“It has nothing to do with bravery; it has nothing to do with will. They simply can’t.”
