It is really really sinking in for me the degree to which LLMs are the ultimate expression of right wing anti-intellectualism. Its proponents are literally mocking the idea that anyone would ever want to learn anything, know anything, develop any actual skill, or have a thought of their own.

This is painful, and saddening, and embarrassing. I feel like we're losing a member of the family - and for no good reason other than that some Americans wanted another season of the worst reality TV show in history.

The civil service is extremely efficient because highly qualified people do important work for below-market pay. They do this because they like it and have a sense of civic duty. Immiserating them makes finding replacements hard and expensive.
