Did the audio book this year after reading it over a decade ago. Watts is such a master class.

Double liked for a SheevaPlug mention. What amazing times we've had.

It seems so unlikely they UDNA is going to happen. Or maybe it happens but oh consumer cards have huge ray tracing engines that are just AWOL on data center GPUs.

Yeah I'm so curious how node did. I haven't seen that benchmarks yet. Still bringing in tinyglobby for now but quite a twist having node:glob.

I don't know the tree type behind my rental house, but left for KubeCon being pretty sure the last golden leaves my bedroom looks out on would be all gone when I returned. Oh fall!

Sooo low low low low power. Yeeesssss.

This isn't so consumers can be lazy! This is so corporations can be lazy!

Imo a bit sad the interesting fedcm spec got reduced to this.

Am so curious if perl is going to live forever in Debian. This is a small step but it'd be rad for the everyday Debain apt tools to all be rust by 2040 or some-such.

I'd love to a way to say: expect this variable will-change, please be ready to update only affected elements for this variable. That would be such a huge boon for animation & effects.

I'm really shattered because I assumed css vars worked like this, were fast. But oh man it's pretty slow, repaints!
November 9, 2025 at 5:57 PM
One other very surprising thing I learned yesterday is that changing css variables is fairly expensive causes a paint to the whole tree not just affected elements.

Seems like a brutal limit to what devs want to use them for: making some top level vars to animate with. bsky.app/profile/jaun...
So much good stuff. Damn this is sad though, holy shit. Surely this can be optimized by browsers, no?

> The first problem with CSS variables, and the reason they sit in C-Tier, is that changing one will always trigger paint on affected elements.
November 9, 2025 at 5:52 PM
Propsoal: will-change for variables. Example:
will-change: --my-var

Or maybe a @property { will-change: true} ?
November 9, 2025 at 5:50 PM
Intuitively it feels like the browser should be able to have a dependency map of where variables are used.

I can sympathize with that getting to be too big a list & having to bail out. And you don't want to store a bunch of links you never use.

I did mean to say pinning at a lower priority, installing only select big ticket items like KDE from unstable.

But it has never been a problem for me to pin with unstable as highest priority. I do pin experimental at lower priority though!
November 9, 2025 at 4:59 PM
Woof sorry to hear that.

I have half a dozen sid systems & the worst thing that has happened is sometimes occasionally a package doesn't have all its dependencies available yet.
November 9, 2025 at 4:58 PM
It's so surprising. Back when I was using a cruddy little router (Netgear wgt634u) as an office e-jukebox, I wasnt super shocked. But like, this motherboard has a "dac" USB port specifically for audio devices!

Sort of guess there's some other weird effect beyond just noisey supply.

These mother fuckers over here ain't afraid of magnets. God what sissies our commander in chiefs are, all rank cowardice disbelied, not a lick of hope for better. Fuck these cowards shits.

So hard to tell whether this administration is idiot children excited for anything or whether they really just want to destabilize & make America weak.

This is stupid as fuck. But still 1/100th less horrific than the idea that we can replace all awacs with space, soon.
November 9, 2025 at 7:18 AM
One dude demoes a PlayStation controlled BlackHawk once & suddenly the administration idiots are ready to throw away the whole army set of capabilities for this maybe perhaps.

Yeah we need drones. But what fucking children. Holy hells!

Mostly yes, but with notable counter example.

The gatcha was actually kinda good & beneficial in Star Wars Battlefront 2 but the blowback versus loot boxes was *enormous* & they changed it up.

Instead of getting random interesting gear, everyone was on the same very very slow progression march.
