The Iris Affair wants to be philosophical and intelligent but also all action, it wants to be socially insightful but also lightly comic and graphically violent. It ends up confused, too long and unfocused.

How does a book that is really badly written sell over a million copies? It's a 2016 thriller with never ending twists, repetitive descriptions and pages of unemotional dialogue . BUT huge sales, book club choices etc. Baffled.

This dark short story started as a competition piece. It has developed into a meditation on punishment, memory, and the persistence of guilt. The horror comes as much from psychological inevitability as from the supernatural twist. Let me know your thoughts 💙📚
