In graduate school it was explained to me that all academic writing should work backwards from the title, include some sort of steganography (i.e. the third letter in every other paragraph spells "Reagan Knew."), and the word count should add up to something fun (666, etc.).

For pop musical examples I go with examples that I *personally* really dig. Hopefully my enthusiasm for the song itself is enough even if the students wouldn't otherwise be interested.
