Breaking character: Ken White has a fantastic post about how "free speech culture" undermines free speech. It's something I've thought about a lot before, but Ken knows way more about it than I do and explains it really well.

So much this! I really think this is a symptom of seeing bikes as exercise equipment instead of transportation. No one would say you should have to pedal your car!
The problem of e-bikes/e-motos is one of their maximum speed and not the presence of a throttle.

one of the most important technological revolutions in history and it has nothing to do with AI.

Trump and his petrostate paymasters want to stop it but at best they'll succeed at costing Americans billions by leaving us slower to adopt it.
The battery boom has begun 🔋⚡️

2024: 69 GW storage added, +66% YoY. Growth looks more like smartphones than power plants—modular, fast, unstoppable. With costs still falling, 2025 will likely surge another 60–70%. The fastest-growing energy in history? Batteries + solar. #BESS #Lithium #Solar #LFP

It was always bullshit.
It has been wild to see what were always the two most paranoid pro-Second Amendment scenarios—the government snatching people away and sending occupying armies into communities—literally happen this year, to the delight of conservatives
There can’t be any gun restrictions because we have to protect against federal government tyranny, and if kids get shot we just have to live with it. Also the President can send troops to cities because the federal government can do whatever it wants. These two ideas are consistent and reasonable.

This is a disgrace - the United States spitting on its own soldiers because they come from a minority the ruling clique holds in contempt. The people who made this decision have a special circle of hell waiting for them; liberals should fight to the bitter end to give these soldiers their due.

Nothing sounds more Trump than this.

Car buyers will now be allowed write off up to $10,000/ year in interest paid on qualifying auto loans

Car drivers can still get over $3,500 in parking tax benefits too

But, bike commuters got their $240/year benefit cut

It's not about the budget, it's a preference & subsidy for people who drive
Ugh. The megabill permanently killed commuter benefits for people who bike to work.

I honestly think a big turning point was Bitcoin, where.... I understood what Bitcoin was. I understood why it wasn't useful as a currency, I understood why it wasn't useful as an investment, I didn't buy Bitcoin. And I sat in rooms with people who didn't understand what it was, who bought it
It’s weird to live in a time when basic principles like cruelty is wrong, cheating is empty & the idea that curiosity, generosity, originality, the satisfaction of earned accomplishments & loving intimacy are the center of a good life feel like countercultural concepts

Because no one spends as much on science as the US does, destroying NIH, NSF, NOAA, NASA, EPA, USDA, USGS, etc. is leading to a brain drain, but it's not to other countries but rather from science. This senseless destruction of US science will hurt the US and the world for a very long time.
To see why destroying the US science enterprise is so detrimental to the world, we have to realize that the US spends more on research and development than any other country in the world (by far), and if we remove China and Japan, the US spends almost as much as ALL other countries combined.

We are in the midst of what many consider the most promising pancreatic cancer cure research in decades. This is literally joining the War on Cancer on the side of cancer. It's happening in multiple departments. They're also attacking mRNA fax science which is the heart of the possible breakthrough.
