If you have to get permission to teach in your area of expertise from people who are definitionally not qualified to adjudicate your expertise then you are no longer working at a university.

You’re working at a state propaganda factory.

as an avowed moralist, let me tell you that it does *not* preclude introspection and self-criticism. i am profoundly aware of my shortcomings! they are the project of my life!

i just don't think "i would struggle if i realized i am a hypocrite" is sufficient to expect less of yourself or others
This paragraph especially!

If I understand him right, he's saying "moral clarity it good" and the right has been utterly immoral so it might sound weird to criticize moral clarity. HOWEVER, because the left is bad [unspecified reasons], "moral clarity is an obstacle to insight." ???

Lol, for the rest of my life I'm just gonna go around thinking of people and using the universal sports dude promo voice to say to myself "GREW UP PRIVILEGED"
There's something really funny about a graphic that just reads "GREW UP PRIVILEGED"

Made this the other night and the chicken was a little meh (wish i could have brined it first tbh), but the vegetables are literally the best vegetables i've ever made--brussels sprouts that somehow both melt in your mouth and still have a good bite

I got Derek Delgaudio's AMORALMAN for my birthday last weekend and I tore through it, finished it in less than a week (got a new lamp to read by as well, which helped).

I enjoyed it quite a bit, and would recommend it

I don’t have a whole lot of advice for people younger than me but the earlier in life you stop worrying about what other people will think and just wholeheartedly enjoy the stuff you like the happier you’ll be
One thing people kind of tell you, but not really, about middle age:

One day you'll be like "oh [thing] looks fun but people will think I'm a loser" about a thing

And then you'll say. Wait a second.

Fuck 'em

Systemically, I think we should be improving affordability, building housing out massively, removing tariffs, putting pressure on healthcare costs, increasing the minimum wage

Personally, I think it's bad for everyone's mental health to constantly think about what we don't have and can't afford

"my position of 'I should have more candy and the other kids should have less candy and be beaten with sticks' made me unpopular in elementary school, but Scalia helped me find the courage to withstand the scorn of my peers as I bravely told my truth"
JUSTICE BRETT KAVANAUGH:

“[Scalia] taught us … what it meant to have a backbone, what it meant to withstand withering criticism, what it meant to be fearless, what it meant to stand up for his principles even when they weren’t popular. Especially when they weren’t popular.”

Some people read this as a condemnation of people, but for me this transparent reality has always been an indication of the moral imperative to improve circumstances to allow for people's better natures to win the day.

A world where we care for one another--even for the baddies--has more good in it
In his excellent sci-fi/action trilogy "The Breach," Patrick Lee's thesis was that under the right circumstances, anybody can become the worst person in the world. (Some may require far more circumstances than others...)

And that's when we get to political science. It is a question of intent.
