Here is Pete Hegseth, on several occasions in 2016, lauding the military "ethos" that means they will refuse to follow unlawful orders - which he reckons is treason, now that they are his orders - because "there have to be consequences for abject war crimes".

Deserves to go viral.

In terrible news (which I missed) Rania died earlier this month. She had really struggled during her pregnancy multiple health conditions and after giving birth it sounds like had a catastrophic outcome.

Rania was one of the first people I spoke with in Gaza and this is just awful for her family 💔
This is Rania- she is one of the very first people I think I spoke with on a video call from Gaza- she was in her tent with her babies on her lap. I remember hearing the paracopter overhead for the first time. She was recently displaced to Khan Younis- her children need food and medicine

In a surprise to absolutely no one, the mum she’s describing is not claiming benefits as a “lifestyle choice”.

This paywalled article is full of “in my grandparents day, blah blah blah” and nasty sneery comments about latest iPhones for spoilt children🙄

This is how Chris Mason, like a child filled with wonder, described "the choreography and theatre that surrounds a Budget" in Feb 2024, when a male Tory Chancellor was in post.

"Plans, or even just options, can be floated... Reaction to them can be tested. Opponents can be teased or wrongfooted." 👀

How about we worry less, as a society, about whether individuals might be cheating to get a disability accommodation or some help buying food, and more about whether extremely wealthy people and corporations are paying their fair share of taxes?

Christian Calgie called for Zarah Sultana to be deported and faced absolutely no professional consequences for it. The norms are gone.
Apart from a few angry posts on here, why will this be cost free? Where’s the stigma gone? Was it ever a genuine one? Have social norms or the rules changed? This is far from the first time he’s written or said something like this and he’ll be on the BBC again soon.
He’s not really trying to hide it. It’s open, unapologetic racism; let’s be plain about it.

Hate to be posting this on a holiday, but there's been renewed interest in the CIA-backed Zero Units in Afghanistan. Here's a good summary of @propublica.org's 2022 reporting on the units and just some of the civilian casualties they were responsible for:
What We Know About U.S.-Backed Zero Units in Afghanistan
Deadly night raids. Faulty U.S. intelligence. A “classified” war loophole. Reporter Lynzy Billing’s investigation offers an unprecedented insight into the civilian casualties of Afghanistan’s Zero Uni...

Australia recorded ZERO cases of cervical cancer in women under 25 for the first time since they started tracking the cancer in the 80s.

This is the power of vaccines.

The HPV vaccine is extremely effective at preventing cancer.

I'm seeing people wonder why ICE is going after Charlotte.

ICE has been at war with Charlotte's sheriff ever since he won in 2018.

We'd covered this at Bolts back in the day; this quote is from that sheriff:
“When the 8 African American sheriffs took over the largest counties in North Carolina, it became a threat to the good ol’ boy system,” says the sheriff of Charlotte. These new sheriffs broke ties with ICE.

But GOP lawmakers cracked down this week, overbidding the governor’s veto to adopt this law:
North Carolina GOP Is Cracking Down on the Black Sheriffs Who Stood Up to ICE
Boosted by new supermajorities, Republicans are closing in on legislation to mandate more collaboration with ICE and preempt local policies hard-won by immigrants’ rights advocates.

So great Brexit worked. GDP down. Trade in goods down. Tax revenue down.

Still, v pleased we have a sovereign but poor govt now.

So smart for people to double down on their Brexit investment, vote REFUK & properly destroy the UK economy by getting rid of clever migrants. 👍💪

I fear that if Johnson were asked this today, there would be lot of umming & erring, some guff about "the custard of conciliation" & "the tiramisu of time", but he would refuse to answer.

That a US President tried to overthrow an election is now unsayable on the British Right & in much of the media
In 2020, Boris Johnson said that Trump "encouraged people to storm the Capitol ... I believe that that was completely wrong. ... I unreservedly condemn encouraging people to behave in the disgraceful way that they did in the Capitol".

Does he still think that?

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

Miraculously, he didn’t hit a single CDC employee! But he did kill David Rose, the police officer who responded, who leaves behind two children and a pregnant wife.

I can't help but imagine the vast attention this case would have received if the race of the shooter and the victim were reversed.

Osborne deserves a lot more condemnation, for not just doing austerity but doing it so cackhandedly:

1. Not borrowing to invest when borrowing costs were at essentially zero

2. Cutting spending by salami slicing every part of the public sector with no real analysis of where could take it
Late period Osborne: interest rates at zero and 50-80bn of headroom: and his priority was “don’t invest”.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.
