I say all this because I want new (and not so new) writers to know it’s okay-and in some cases better-if you don’t knock it out of the park on your first try. Build that newsletter list. Fine tune that backmatter. Get all your ducks in a row so when it does happen, you’re ready.

Plus, when you only have one book, where can the go next? Only to someone else, giving you just that one title to convince them you are a writer they should or only remember, but also prioritize.

They also haven’t developed the thick skin that will help protect them from the bite of bad reviews-and those will ALWAYS come if you sell enough books.

Most new writers don’t have the infrastructure (things like newsletter funnels, websites, well-directed back matter, etc.) set up to handle and make the most of a huge influx of readers.
