Youngest kid has gone to school extra days this week. More days in total his week than he attended in all of Grade 9. If you are in despair as a parent this time of year, please know it CAN get better. Schools CAN do better, and kids can, too

Unlikely items removed from teen's school backpack: can of corn won at poker, length of pipe, disassembled clock parts, half a fork, single polished stone, crumpled covid masks, pair of pliers, paintbrush withbunknown toxic substances, and enough candy wrappers to stop a bullet.

One thing I wasn't expecting as a parent since the beginning of the pandemic was how much extra work it would require to re connect young people to the world and to community. They need adults to connect them. Vitally important work, but hard. Time-consuming. Worth it.
