In this brief, @marthasjones.bsky.social and I demonstrate that free Black Americans spent decades claiming birthright citizenship against those who denied it, that the Framers of the 14 Amend. listened, and that these facts should matter to today's Courts.

What an important move - both to provide emergency relief and to model doing what we can, where we can.
Breaking News: The Mellon Foundation announced $15 million to support state humanities councils after federal aid cancellations left some in danger of collapse. The endowment provides crucial support to museums, historical sites, cultural festivals and community projects.

I really could not be happier for Kaitlyn Chen, whose play, drive, and heart are beyond inspiring. Watching her Princeton teammates and coach cheer her on in the final four is such a reminder of the lifelong power of women showing up for each other. 🐯🏀
Kaitlyn Chen on what her Princeton head coach, Carla Berube, told her after Chen won a national title with UConn: "She said she was so proud and she was so happy that I came here, which I'm so happy I came here. And I'm so glad that I was able to have that moment with her." @thenext.bsky.social

We always need Dina’s words, but I’m holding them especially close this week.
What does it mean to be “civilized”? asks Dina Nayeri. It is, she writes, “to live with a moral standard that takes into account our fellow man, and to ask: What do we owe one another, and what do we owe strangers?”

we don’t talk enough about this aspect of our current moment: the sadness and grief of losing institutions that were once so important to us, because they proved unworthy of our support. and it is real grief, because we lose what those institution might have been, if only they had been better.
thank god i used my personal liberties to cancel my subscription last year. (which was painful as someone who worked with wapo for YEARS. i cried the first time i walked into that building bc i was so happy to be there.)

💔 I keep thinking of an oral history interview she did with Julian Bond where she talked about her work as a teacher and the way she connected with students, treating teaching as a two-way street. Her voice was unmatched power.

As someone with roots in the Delta, I was particularly struck with sadness reading this story. It's occurring in so many places, but it's increasingly gutting to see it keep happening.
