This is confusing. If he arrived at the CTA gates, he'd pass flight connections signs, and then be in the baggage area and straight out into the arrivals area without passing immigration. I'd guess the immigration officer wasn't that, or wasn't working, and he just said 'How do I get to terminal 5?'

Agree somewhat, but also having an effective state prevents the slide toward that (Authoritarianism seems more often to be born quickly out of chaos), so there's a balance to be struck here.

Compass, or some other maritime tech needed to get out of the Med? With deep sea navigation expansion could’ve been faster, into Africa and ultimately to the Americas?

That’s what a marginal rate is. You get paid an additional £1, you get 38p, HMRC gets 62p. (that’s without and child related benefits)
