today’s fun puzzle for NYT readers: can you find the Vows column that very discreetly reveals that both members of the couple left their spouses for each other?

it actually sort of undermines the poem for me to learn that this is the man "Having a Coke With You" is about (ballet dancer Vincent Warren). this guy actually IS hotter than all art

also did you guys know that Hemingway's final wife, Mary, liked to "be a boy" during sex with him, and played erotic games where she made him "be the girl," and wrote in her diary about the two of them goofing around and conducting this pretend interview:

researching Hemingway's life is so funny, I don't know how I'm going to cull it down for my class lecture. did you know about the time he was working as a war reporter and running a side hustle as a French Resistance warlord and was charged with violating the Geneva Convention

everyone knows about Virginia Woolf saying "on or about 1910 human character changed" but I feel like it's less known that she immediately follows this up with a relatable example: have you ever noticed that your cook has gotten so overfamiliar with you these days?

now I'm revisiting James Joyce's letters to Nora. I think he's referring to the g-spot here? once again in awe of this genius mind

I'm teaching chapter 4 of Ulysses next week so I just re-read it for the first time in a DECADE and I cannot fucking believe how fucking good Ulysses is. it blew my mind the first time around and it continues to blow my mind now. what a miracle. I'm so happy

a thing that ACTUALLY JUST HAPPENED: I went to Dunkin and the young barista handed me my coffee and said “I’m an ally to the LGBT community.”
“What?”
“I’m an ally to the LGBT community. Ever since high school”

last night I was going through photos my ex-husband took of me at the Central Park Zoo in 2018, and LOOK WHAT I FOUND. I completely forgot this photo existed (because at the time the owl wasn't famous)

I think this is the clearest analysis of Mangione and the response to him I've thus far read

it's funny that skywriting technology hasn't improved in the 100 years since it was invented. you'd think we'd have photorealistic sky drawings now, but we're still just like those Mrs Dalloway characters staring at the sky going "is that an....A?...or maybe an R?"

just realized I'm approaching the 23rd anniversary of the last time I threw up. January 2002 I had a stomach flu and missed a week of ninth grade. I haven't thrown up since then, even though I've tried. maybe I should try again. maybe this should be my New Year's Resolution

my mouth herpes outbreaks have recently been taking an interesting new form -- larger clusters, smaller sores, lip edge only -- and I suspect it's triggered by abrasions from kissing someone with stubble. but unfortunately "cold sores from kissing?" is an ungoogleable question

putting the duvet in the duvet cover is usually a 20-minute ordeal for me, and tonight was no exception, but this time I stumbled upon a fun if not particularly labor-saving trick: simply climb into the duvet cover and crawl around inside it like a kid in a blanket fort

I recently rewatched The Wizard of Oz and was really surprised to notice for the first time that the Wizard humorously implies that all war veterans are cowards. I feel like 1939 was the last possible year Hollywood could get away with a joke like that

"we tell ourselves stories in order to live" has an air of profundity but tbh I'm not sure it actually rises to the level of a thought

stray Gypsy thought: it's funny that Miss Mazeppa's gimmick (playing the bugle) has nothing to do with being a gladiator. she just happens to be dressed as a gladiator that day but it's not her whole thing

just remembered a few years ago I went on a date with a guy who asked me what my favorite musical was, and I said Gypsy. "Aw," he said, "you're so wholesome!"
I was like "??? it's about a stripper?" and he admitted he'd never seen it. his favorite musical was Cats
