I haven’t read the King book, but it could also be more faithful to the text? A few possibilities. All disappointing.

This ending seems to be a common complaint among most reviews, and it’s rather baffling because Wright has been so so good at sticking the landing.

Upon many years of reflection, I’ve decided that Maverick was the hero and the villain and the whole movie is Man vs. Himself. Superficially, Ice is an antagonist, but he’s only a “villain” of Maverick is only a “hero.” Top Gun becomes something else once you allow it this kind of reading.

Yeah. I liked Blue Gardenia. I enjoy Conti — and this one has a nice twist on the amnesia noir trope. It doesn’t stick the landing, but I give it credit for trying something.
