Every time may brain sees the word "bookmaker", for a split second I still think: "someone who makes books". And then I remember that's not what it means, and I get annoyed

Related but different, I sometimes have "cicada moments", from when I was sure "circadian" rhythm was spelt "cicadian" rhythm because cicadas are famous for their sleep cycles. I have a PhD. I studied Latin.
My spouse has this thing he calls “grasshopper moments” —from when he was a kid and he realized that grasshoppers are called that because they hop in the grass. I was today years old when I realized that quart is short for a quarter of a gallon. As in a quart of milk.
I have a PhD.

Svelte migration update
September 26, 2025 at 6:56 AM
Can any #svelte people help me out? Am I losing my marbles here with these transitions or is this new behaviour? Transitions are playing when components unmount, even if you specify local svelte.dev/playground/2...

It's svelte 5 migration time and I'm not complaining but I need everyone to tell me it's all going to be ok and also tell me how to initialise/sync mutable state.

Probably won't happen but I'm enjoying the idea that I could earn more from a class action payout from AI companies stealing my book than I got in royalties from book sales. But then I wonder, would I have sold it to them if they'd asked?

Colleague: I want some data from this site but it wants me to do xyz to get it. Is there any way to scrape it?

Me: Probably not, they wouldn't just ... oh wait look at this data.json in the network tab

Hopefully these experts have done more than just listen to @footballweekly.bsky.social for 3 years
OpenAI releases the newest version of the AI model that powers its popular ChatGPT chatbot, with CEO Sam Altman promoting it as like having a “team of Ph.D. level experts in your pocket.”
OpenAI releases GPT-5, calling it a ‘team of Ph.D. level experts in your pocket’
OpenAI says its latest version of the popular AI model is better at coding, more accurate and less deceptive than previous versions.

As a family our books are very organised, it's just that one of the categories is "James' books"
How do you organise your books? Most book owners... don't

Not organised: 45%
By size: 19%
By genre: 17%
Alphabetically, by author: 11%
By whether I've read them: 10%
By colour: 4%
Alphabetically, by title: 2%
Other: 6%

I'm not sure who thought this was a good idea but @prisma.io just prompted me to fill out a customer satisfaction survey _in the command line_ while generating the schema. Not even a 'Press x to skip'. Really bugged me. Get out of my flow.

Not usually one to talk political but I'm reading A Tale of Two Cities and this amazing sentence just won't leave my head:

"The leprosy of unreality disfigured every human creature in attendance upon Monseigneur."

I recently turned off copliot/codeium and not sure I'll go back. Plus I'm pretty sure I can now refer to my code as "artisanal".
✍️ "Hard truths about AI-assisted coding" tips & tricks in my latest article: bit.ly/ai-assisted

While AI-Assisted coding can get you 70% of the way there (great for prototypes or MVPs), the final 30% requires significant human intervention for quality and maintainability.

TIL that prisma orm won't generate a type unless it's used in a model. I TIL'd it the hard way.

A question for #svelte users. If we don't use $effect, how do we sync state? I need to do this all the time:
1. Model loaded from the server
2. Need an editable copy to bind to the form inputs
3. Keep an original copy to check for changes
4. Need to update the editable copy if the model updates
