We show how construct validity depends on which parties are included and recommend a data-driven approach. Crucially, choosing a set of large and ideologically diverse parties helps maintain validity.

Across 39 countries, we show that brief measures relying on subsets of just 3–5 parties can still achieve acceptable validity.
