We show how construct validity depends on which parties are included and recommend a data-driven approach. Crucially, choosing a set of large and ideologically diverse parties helps maintain validity.

Across 39 countries, we show that brief measures relying on subsets of just 3–5 parties can still achieve acceptable validity.
Two key findings support this:
(1) Brief measures correlate highly with full measures covering all parties.
