I’ve been researching owls in Japanese art recently, and find their representation rather ordinary, unlike their depictions of anything from the sea which in my mind are unparalleled in art. Perhaps it’s because their appreciation of sea creatures starts on the plate.
A small Corinthian aryballos in the shape of an owl (circa 630 BC). It served as a perfume container.
