Our preprint on evolved formate assimilation by recent-grad Dr. Brittany Mazny. How is the CO2 intermediate retained to prime the Calvin cycle? The answer includes pigment production as an overlooked CO2 concentrating mechanism. w @blasarre.bsky.social + A Govindaraju www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Standing up for science in Indy with colleagues at all levels. Many of us came to the US for its excellent reputation in the sciences. 25 years on it still stuns me that prominent US politicians undermine and villainize their scientists. The cost to the economy, health, and nat'l security is real.

Microbial cross-feeding is commonly thought to drive gene loss. But is that true when cross-fed nutrients repress gene expression and thereby lower the cost of a gene? New work by my former grad student Dr. Ella Chuang, @megbehri.bsky.social and others! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Big day for celebration in the McKinlay lab. Congrats to Dr. Ying-Chih 'Ella' Chuang who successfully defended her PhD! Ella also had a dissertation chapter on adenine cross-feeding accepted for publication in ISME J!

bottleneck → adenine accumulates → adenine diffuses from cell → auxotroph uses adenine → auxotroph reciprocates → coexistence

15/49 R. pal isolates do this or something like it.

Proud of grad student 1st author Ella Chuang.
Thanks also to our great collaborators.
