What I meant was, you can tell you are not showing, so yes

I think the fact that we can recognize that we aren't doing the thing right yet actually puts us a bit ahead of some folks. At least we aren't the person who doesn't realize the importance of structure and/or how to recognize the difference between showing and telling when they see it.

This is an annoying answer, but I eventually started to make headway through sheer dogged persistence, looking at other people doing it well, trying again and again to do it myself. If there's an faster way to learn this stuff, I wish I knew it. 😵‍💫

I used to be this way about story structure. I read books about it; picked out structure points in other people's work; tried to outline my work with structure points; damn if I could write anything with story structure to save my life.
