I learned very late in life that advent calendars have treats of any kind in them. My aunt Peg, who was probably 10 at the time, made my mom and dad a felt calendar with a tree silhouette on top. Every day you'd unpin a small illustration she'd cut out of a magazine from a day & pin it to the tree.
everything is bonkers right now and we need a timeline cleanse. let’s play a game. if I handed you a blank check but you could ONLY spend it on an Advent calendar, what absurdly pricy collection of little treats are you buying yourself?

Blocking hatemongers is one thing but this trend of using mass block lists to avoid hearing from people who might or might not hold points of view you expect to disagree with is unhealthy imo and hurts the platform.

The answer even for bright moderately involved people is surprisingly little. Probably a comparable fraction could name three general managers in any sport for a team they don't root for, or like could explain why they have a dissenting opinion on a cy young winner. It's a whole occupation!
I’ve been thinking a lot about a new kind of polling I’d like to see. We have polling that measures public opinion, which is obviously important, but I’d love to see a little more empirical work on public knowledge: what do voters know about politics and policy?
