Limited character count? No worries.

Everything you need is on the lovely poster.

But, in case...

28 November, 6.30pm

Me and @justinrobertsonart.bsky.social at Margate Off License, talking books, records, and kidnapping Jon Dasilva.

And then all down to Faith in Strangers for the afters.

Micropoem competition time for Halloween (for the fantastic @blackboughpoetry.bsky.social)

Written, fittingly, with ragged nerves after about two hours' sleep.

Right then @victoriaspires.bsky.social... I said I was going to give the #promptcombo a go and I've ended up with something that at least leans into the idea of #DreamLogic.

Probably not finished, obviously, but leaving it for now...

Contrary to my earlier claim to have started writing poems a couple of years ago, I just remembered these.

Written in desperation as I didn't have enough gas in the tank to write proper match reports for a 2018 World Cup project.

Happy World Poetry Day! 😂

Thanks to the support of a fantastic Sensei, Mr Lee Adams, and my son, Nat, I was awarded my black belt in Uechi Ryu karate this weekend.

Doing a Dan grading in Germany, in front some of the very best in the world was incredible. An honour I'm very lucky to have been granted.

Now the work begins.

A serving suggestion I can properly get on board with...

A post of thank yous.

To @favlit.org and The Little Green Bookshop for sponsoring and hosting.

To @sarahhehir.bsky.social , Jake Nathan, and @jpseabright.bsky.social for being so erudite and ace.

And to all those who gave their attention and shared their words.

Better than I dared to hope!

There's some serious skill on display here from Camille Ralphs.

Studied and clever, but lots of fun too.

My (not quite) daily reminder that @propelmagazine.bsky.social is well worth a look this month.

I've got a poem in there, sure I do, but that aside, there's absolute GOLD in this issue.

So, SO good.

Imagine reading your poetry on this stage to a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive audience.

Now make that mental image reality, by attending Page vs Stage, at 12.30pm on 1st March, in the beautiful Arden Theatre for @favlit.org

See the link in comments to grab tickets and secure your spot.

Good day for post!

A phenomenal tape from Arab Strap (plus download code - I'm not a complete reactionary.

Gboyega Odubanjo's Adam. I've only read two or three of Odubanjo's poems, but I'm looking forward to losing myself in this.

DOOM! I absolutely cannot wait to get started on this. G.O.A.T.

Second book of the year (not counting several volumes of poetry on the go).

So beautifully crafted, every turn of phrase a laugh-out-loud triumph.

While reading (and listening to) @propelmagazine.bsky.social online is a joy, being able to leaf through the anthology is even better.

Especially when it contains incredible scope and some really great work, including terrific pieces by @jpseabright.bsky.social and @rcurzon.bsky.social

Go buy.

Just been to the Francis Bacon exhibition at the NPG.

If you haven't been, go.

It. Is. Incredible.

I haven't made any resolutions as such, but I do want to read more novels in 2025.

I've started with this, and it's predictably superb.

#1 Paul Auster - The Brooklyn Follies

Best of #10

Few writers have made as much of an impact on me as John Burnside.

That his last collection was as magnificent as Ruin, Blossom is both a joy and a stark reminder of what we've all lost.

Best of #9 (of 10)

I have my dad to thank for introducing me to the writing of @kathleenjamie.bsky.social - he gave me a copy of Cairn, and I'm profoundly grateful he did.

A mixture of short pieces and poems, it's some of the best writing of place I suspect I'll ever read.

A beautiful book.

Best of #8!

No introduction necessary (for me at least).

The old man, going from strength to strength with a collection of sequences that may well be his best yet - from the simple beauty of Stones, to the conceptual narrative invention of Nine.

Best of #7

I've had the pleasure of hearing @shevchenkoknight.bsky.social read from Food for the Dead twice this year.

I bought it straight after the first occasion, and then, following the online launch of Helen Mort's Dad vs Dad, I bought it again to give to a friend.

Yep "that" good. Go buy

Best of #6

There's something about Matthew Hollis' rhythms and word choice that connects immediately and deeply.

Had it been released this year instead of last, Earth House would have been a shoe in, but his translation of The Seafarer (published earlier this year) is just as astonishing.

I've been busy, so I'm playing catch up with my "Best of" list for 2024.

Of course, I have the traction of dress shoes on an ice rink, so that's not quite the catastrophe I'm making it out to be.

Lavinia Greenlaw is, hands down, one of my favourite writers. These are both utterly essential.

Best of... it's no. 4!

A reconnection with an old school friend led to me attending the online launch of Dad vs. Dad, by @helenmort.bsky.social

As terrific as the event was, the book's even better, with erasure poems and exquisitly crafted personal pieces exploring the impact of stroke. Go buy!
December 24, 2024 at 4:25 PM
Best of... part 3

When I started reading poetry seriously, The Air Year, by @carolinebirduk.bsky.social was one of the volumes that really hit home.

Hearing her read from Ambush at Still Lake this year, was a proper highlight - endless invention and complete commitment to every idea. Wonderful!
December 23, 2024 at 5:41 PM
Best of... list warning #2!

The sustained focus and seemingly endless invention of Rachael Allen's God Complex is incredible.

I'm always impressed at how poets maintain the momentum and world-building in long poems, but this... is something else!

A massive recommendation.
December 22, 2024 at 9:07 PM
Best of... list warning!

I've read more poetry this year than ever before (I made the, frankly ridiculous, decision last year to start writing it, so I'm reading little else).

Having loved Malkin, I was looking forward to this by Camille Ralphs.

It's exceptional, buy on sight!
