The problem with America is that all of us are freaks, but we think that if we bully people into thinking that we're normal, our particular brand of freakiness will magically become the majority.

Ross's "conservatives must be above informal judgment, or else" goes hand in hand with Trump's "conservatives must be above the law, or else". If society will not accommodate them in all their unpleasantness, will not "say thank you", they would choose a state of nature & the war of all against all.

Look, they do not have the capacity or competence to do this at the scale they want you to fear they do, and your fear is precisely their greatest force multiplier. Everybody who is cowed into silence by their threats allows them a smaller pool to focus on.

This is one of the most insightful comments on American politics I’ve ever read.
Every Democratic president post-Nixon has believed their unique charisma and healing ability could reunite an America divided by Republican crimes. Carter and Watergate, Clinton and Iran-Contra, Obama and Iraq/torture, Biden and January 6. They just bought the right more time to fester.
