American photographer, Robert Michael Mapplethorpe was best known for his celebrity portraits, nudes, self-portraits, and still-life images. His most controversial works documented and examined the gay male BDSM subculture of NYC in the late 60s and early 70s. He died of AIDS at the age of 42.

AIDs and homophobia in the 1980's were difficult for me. The first "gay" book I read was "A Boy's Own Story," by Edmund White. For the first time, I felt understood, and not alone. He died yesterday at 85 yrs. old.
