This is essential to ensuring our weather forecast offices become fully staffed, especially to prevent burnout and overworking of our NWS employees. They took an oath to protect life and property, and this memo will help make sure they can continue to do that without restriction.

Seriously though, our heads are spinning and we would love words of encouragement and advice from parents in similar predicaments (no family nearby for childcare, NEED double income, etc.)

I guess it comes down to making friends with other young parents and connections to find trustworthy childcare, or finding a way for my husband to somehow double his salary so I could stay home for a while… but SAHM doesn’t feel like the best option given it could be difficult to find another job.

Even so, 12 week unpaid work is excruciating when you have a newborn to pay for, likely medical bills from delivery, and regular bills. How the heck do people do this? Our heads are spinning trying to plan a course of action lol

“It's essential for public safety. It's essential for the economy of Kansas and agriculture producers, aviation industry, and that seems to be in jeopardy based upon where we are. And that these weather service offices need to be staffed 24/7.

“…and hurricane forecasts in real time. There are other critical contracts for Texas that are in commerces contracting backlogs such as routine maintenance repairs to NOAA's aging hurricane Hunter fleet.
