My one convention indulgence: #vtm dice in black and ghostly green from a local vendor.

Works for me. Here you go.

Putting this up in advance of the New Year. One of the groups I hope to build is derived from the Amalgam Characters challenge that @owenkcstephens.bsky.social posted on the other site some years ago. Turns out I actually like a lot of those ideas.

28. Completing the InQuest-era trifecta, let's add in the original Netrunner CCG. I played a whole lot of this when it came out, and had the honor of writing the game's 5-star review.

27. This is my "in case of emergency" pick, since I'm shy on time. Of course I love Vampire. Most of the Vampires, actually. I'm picking Revised because, again, the InQuest connection, but I could as easily choose V5 or V20 — hell, the d6 intro rules set was great, too.

26. In Nomine. I associate this game with so many good memories from the late '90s, both as a GM, a MIB, and an InQuest staffer. I really wish there had been a 20th Anniversary edition to collect and revise it. Maybe at 30.

25. I own Katanas & Trenchcoats, a ‘90s pastiche with a meta twist.
December 11, 2024 at 3:28 AM
24. I own Under Hollow Hills, a PBTA game about a traveling faerie circus.
December 10, 2024 at 10:22 PM
23. I own Blades in the Dark. I’ve been running a game of it for around a year now.

22. I own Clockwork Dominion, which is one of the last examples of what I’d call a “regionally popular” RPG. Steampunk dystopia, uses a custom Deck of Fate for resolution.

21. I own and am fond of the superhero books for the TinyD6 system from Gallant Knight Games.

20. Nobilis. Before there was the Black Cube, there was the Big White Book.

20. Thanks to the folks at Studio Hermitage, I own a lot of Our Brilliant Ruin. You can own it too; the PDF is available for free.

19. ICON. Is it fair to list a game that's not out of beta yet? I'll decide later. A tactical fantasy game with lots of flair on the front, and an archetype-based FitD game on the back end.

18. Paperback. What a great little word game. There's a 10th anniversary edition now, which I have yet to check out, but this standout from the deckbuilder era still holds up for me.

17. Mage: the Ascension. If I need an entry on short notice, I can always pull on one of the World Of Darkness games. I've run and played a lot of Mage; I think I'd go with 2E as my favorite, but there's much to recommend in all of them.

16. UnderWorld. Another game I love irrespective of its quality. Inspired by works like Neverwhere and the "Beauty and the Beast" TV show, it's a kitchen-sink urban fantasy game set in Your Favorite City's subway network. Probably could work in PBTA or Fate.

15. 13th Age. My love for this one follows a through-line from the previous one; if MCAU was a new lens on 3E, then 13A took a similar stance to 4E/3.5E. Definitely the most disproportionate materials-owned-to-times-played ratio in my collection.

14: Arcana Unearthed. These days, I love the Diamond Throne setting more than the 3.0 implementation, but I was really excited by its take on d20 fantasy. I prefer the original to its Arcana Evolved version (mainly because of the art), and I haven't seen the Cypher take yet.

13. A game I own (and am starting to love) is Invisible Sun. To be fair, I share ownership of this one. We started playing it in October, and I'm learning how it works without being spoiled in advance.

12. A game I own (and may come to love) is Velvet Generation, the second edition of Starchildren. Aliens come to earth to start/join bands, solve/cause problems, and try to save Earth from a dystopian future.
