So yes, revisiting old vaccines is a bad omen, but from my standpoint as a parent of littles, an important nuance and insightful stat are totally swamped out by this headline’s seemingly deliberate, inflammatory phrasing
But committee did vote 8-3 that the combined measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (MMRV) vaccine is got recommended before age 4. They said children in this age group should receive the measles, mumps and rubella, or MMR, vaccine separately from the varicella vaccine. Varicella is the virus that causes chickenpox. About 85% of children currently get the MMR and chickenpox vaccines separately for their first dose, according to data collected by the CDC. About 15% of kids get a single dose of the combination MMRV vaccine.

Discrepancies on how to implement the agreement - which was not put in writing - leaves some of the tariff measures still unclear. Japan insists it secured a U.S. commitment that, for items with an existing tariff rate below 15%, the total duty including the reciprocal tariff will be capped at 15%. For items with an existing tariff above 15%, no additional tariff will be imposed. That promise was absent from an executive order signed by the president on July 31, which shows only the European Union enjoying this more favorable calculation. White House officials confirmed to Japanese media on Wednesday that the Japanese rate will be determined as published and not by using the EU method that caps some rates at 15%.

Idk if this is unintuitive to people (replies to this post say yes for a lot of people), but this quote is 100% true. Beer gardens were absolutely third spaces for people in their earlier days in the US. Been their function since the beginning and it made them a ripe target for prohibitionists.

Oklahoma! has a lot of cool moments of chromatic harmony. “Pore Jud” has always struck me but this progression is kinda sneaky wild. Pretty smooth in context, an ambiguous voice leading kind of thing, but consecutive chords hailing the different whole tone scales is real striking.

19th c. German-Americans often undertook special efforts to mark American holidays/occasions, proving patriotism. Theaters, Turner clubs, etc. would do things like this variety program celebrating Washington's birthday. Notable this one was February 1864 and included a play called "A Free Vote."

Morbid anecdote from my research today. Playwright Ferdinand Raimund allegedly died after a doctor recommended he go see a play to cheer him up. Doctor didn't know the play was Raimund's own. Then Raimund died.
Viennese Play Recalls Story of Its Author's Death. One of the "novelties" of the later season at the Burgtheater, at Vienna, will be Raimund's "Verschwender" ("The Spend-thrift"), which had its first performance at the Josefstadt theater, in that city, on Feb. 20, 1834. That was the stage which the author made his first appearance before a Vienna audience as an actor, in the spring of 1814. Raimund was a genius, according to the critics of his day, and his versatility was demonstrated when he appeared in the same week as Feldkummel, Franz Moor, Rochus Pumpernickel and Gessler. While his tragic roles won applause and appreciation, his efforts as a comedian aroused enthusiasm, which reached a high point when he was seen in the local farce "The Musicians of the Chicken Market," and then came his own work, "Der Verschwender," in which he played the part of Valentin. He played it for the last time at Hamburg on May 1, 1836. Away from Vienna there was less enthusiasm for the serio-comic play which the author-actor loved so well, and brooding over this fact unbalanced his mind. He retired from the stage and spent much of his time at Gutenstein. With the revival of "Der Verschwender" the story of Raimund's death is once more new. had consulted the highest medical authori-ties, so goes the story, in the hope that he might regain his health, but without good results. One day he went to a spe-cialist, to whom he did not tell his name, and explained his condition. After an examination the doctor said: "There is nothing the matter with you. All you need is amusement, and I suggest that you begin by seeing 'Der Verschwender,'" "And you think that it will cheer me?" "If it does not, nothing will," said the physician, and Raimund went his way. The next morning the artistic world was startled by the news that Raimund was dead; dead by his own hand.

Wikipedia’s entry for sixth Academy Awards: When Rogers presented Best Director, he opened the envelope and simply announced, "Come up and get it, Frank!" Frank Capra, certain he was the winner, ran to the podium to collect the Oscar, only to discover Rogers had meant Frank Lloyd, who had won for Cavalcade. Rogers then called the third nominee, George Cukor, to join the two Franks on stage. After this, he summoned two of the Best Actress nominees—Diana Wynyard and May Robson-to the stage. Although they both thought they won in a tie, Rogers thanked them for their performances before announcing the actual winner: Katharine Hepburn.

Maybe this is stupid, but micro plastics on/in the brain while re-reading Vibrant Matter
The tale hazards an account of materiality, even though it is both too alien and too close to see clearly and even though linguistic means prove inadequate to the task. The story will highlight the extent to which human being and thinghood overlap, the extent to which the us and the it slip-slide into each other. One moral of the story is that we are also nonhuman and that things, too, are vital players in the world.

I wouldn't ever call someone out for it, but one of my academic pet peeves is when people pepper what they're saying with "right?" after a claim. Reading Jonathan Sterne's Diminished Faculties, and that isn't his point, but to me "right?" usually has a similar assumed universal as *humanities we*

Impairment phenomenology gives the lie to the idea of an unimpaired phe-nomenology, that a humanities we—a common experience assumed to be shared between author and reader, usually framed in terms of affects and desires — could be the source of coherent descriptions of the world, felt relations to it, texts, aesthetic experiences, and political crises alike. The problem with the humanities we is that it is its own bizarre universalism and assumes a fixity of experience. If I use those pronouns, it will be in reference to a specific group of which I am a part, and which you may or may not be a part.
