It's official! @ripplingideas.bsky.social is a registered non-profit company in the UK 🎉🎉🎉

We'll be applying for charitable status once we have potential funding committed/secured.

I propose a combination of static and dynamic signals.

Static are those controllable by the authors, fixed at the point of sharing whereas dynamic are responsive to the community and change over time.

Take a look at some potential signals

Evidence to the remarkable things being said about me.

To note; I don't have a personality disorder, I'm a decent enough scientist and I'm certainly not a sociopath.

Jessie just chilling out in the peaks. Little timeline cleanse.

Found my earlier data.

Yes, bioRxiv/medRxiv lead to more downloads/views than the other platforms (that we had data for in this initial look). Would love to see @altmetric.com data & more on this

For example I've been looking at the impact of peer review, preLights etc on preprint views. This is an example without any attention but shows a sharp decline after posting and another after publishing, which settles into a fairly constant pattern.

*Need to also look at social media post impact
April 8, 2025 at 12:28 PM
So, when should you post your @biorxivpreprint.bsky.social preprint relative to journal submission?

To get the most benefits, you should post preprints 1 month before journal submission. ~50% of the views your preprint gets in the first year occur within the first month of posting!

Indeed, looking at only views within 1 year of posting, we see that 50% of those occur within 1 month, 75% within 6 months.

Again, for all immunology preprints on bioRxiv (up to end 2023).

My coding skills aren't good enough to do even half of the projects I'd love to do. But thanks to wonderful people like @steveroyle.bsky.social making code public I can at least play around and show my ideas are worth pursuing.

Here's an initial play with immunology #preprints

You would not know this was a labour government would you.

They're handing it to Reform on a platter. Utter failures, putting the rich first.
March 27, 2025 at 9:01 PM
The irony of this is that Prasad could very well be decribing himself here. He's a grifting opportunist who poses an enormous danger to public health.

This article is a great insight into the genuine problems in academia and why reform (the right kind) is desparately overdue.

And it's a lovely sunny day.

Good to see our call to action for the OS community nice and center stage! 😀

There's still be relative silence (or continued capitulation) in this space which is very disheartening.

It's a big sad day. So, turn off the TV & step away from the internet. Put your walking boots on, get out in nature, headphones in.

We have an excellent episode all about the bonfire that is academic publishing, with some cool fruit fly talk thrown in!

Let us distract you! pod.fo/e/29e199

Love this & highly jealous I didn't write it!

This fig in particular highlights things I've been saying & trying ot push organisations into combatting - Research culture & the many issues are directly tied to traditional publishing.

Publishing is the lynchpin in improving research culture

Loving the new bioRxiv toolbar @richardsever.bsky.social!

(can we call it a toolbar still?). Much more prominent and makes the transparency much clearer 🪟

My job is to be an expert on this, with a life sci focus.

My experience is that people justify why any studies are flawed or otherwise not worth recognising. But here are two quick examples, both inserted known errors:

1. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9676667/
2. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...
