At the Autumn Equinox, day and night balance, and you get very high tides!
Last night, the equinox tide made the River Otter in #EastDevon flow backwards. Thanks to the Lower Otter Restoration Project, restored habitats now boost wildlife and natural flood resilience
It's also absolutely stunning 🌊🌱

Great evening with the #EastDevon Farmers group, checking out kit that helps cultivate with less soil disturbance.
The big machines were impressive, but the real win? Pasties+ farmer chats = some exciting #FiPL project ideas.
Never underestimate the power of the pasty. 🥟

Brilliant day with #DevonWildlifeTrust, #EastDevonNationalLandscape & #BlackdownHillsNL teams in the Otter catchment 🦫

Talking #beaver ecology, management & protection, then exploring a new active territory with fresh dams, ponds & gnawed trees. Not a bad way to spend a day!

Great evening at Blamphayne Sawmill with 70+ farmers from across the #EastDevonNationalLandscape for the East Devon Farmers Group summer meet-up 🌾🪵

Loved sharing an update on #FarmingInProtectedLandscapes & chatting about future projects. Big thanks to the Blamphayne team! 👏

Thrilled to start as FiPL Programme Officer for East Devon National Landscape!

Huge thanks to the amazing Woodland Trust team, it’s been a joy. Excited for what’s ahead, supporting nature-friendly, landscape-rich projects across this beautiful part of the world.

This is a really satisfying image. A new Dalmatian Pelican colony established themselves on artificial islands in Bulgaria, but this photo looks like it could easily be in front of a retail park in Norfolk!

It's #NationalTreeWeek! 🌳 I revisited our 11ha woodland at Leathley, planted through the Woodland Trust's #GrowBackGreener grant. Despite a fence breach, herbivory signs were minimal. Noticed bushier growth in trees without tubes—a more natural form! Details here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qrz3...

The captive Glow-worm colony, part of a reintroduction project with Lower Ure Conservation Trust, have donned their sleeping caps and gone into winter diapause.

Last week I moved them to their new shed home at Westbury Wildlife Park Foundation where there’ll rest up until spring.

Over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of working with landowner Alistair on a 11.25ha woodland creation project in Leathley, North Yorkshire. Last winter, we planted nearly 14,000 trees as part of The Woodland Trusts #GrowBackGreener grant.

As autumn approaches, it’s time for "beat up surveys." These surveys evaluate the survival rates of trees planted in woodland creation schemes. Fortunately, the weather was on my side for this week’s survey. It was encouraging to see the trees popping out the tubes only after 7 months from planting.

Lovely walk today on 1 of my sites today
The scheme will be funded by the Grow Back Greener grant scheme as a natural processes scheme. It has a beautiful copse of Oak & Birch at its heart that we will try to expand, to create a biodiverse wood/scrub mix in amongst the rocky outcrops #woodlandtrust

Cracking day out in the Howgills with the Woodland Trust's
North Outreach team, led by Pete Leeson.
Looking at some fantastic scrub, wood & wood pasture creation at a landscape scale.
Some absolutely fantastic habitats & great oppertunity for species recovery
Give Pete's Tree Amble podcast a listen.

A few photos from a potential new woodland creation site. It's a craggy upland pasture, with an Oak/Birch woodland at it's heart. We are looking to encourage the land to establish a mosaic of scrub, woodland & open space through our Natural Colonisation - Grow Back Greener scheme. #woodlandtrust

Recently I've had a lot of leave to take. So what does a person who spends all their working time thinking about & working with trees do? Have a walk in the woods. This is Grass Woods, a fabulous ancient woodland with large Hazel coppice coops, a tonne of history inc a Brigantian hill fort & a dog

We're proud to partner with the Woodland Trust and the University of York on this pioneering reforesting research.

"Restoring habitats across a whole valley has the potential to deliver big benefits for people, nature and climate," said
Prof Dom Spracklen.

Replanting lost woodlands cuts the risk of extreme flooding
Pioneering research will for the first time monitor how the creation of England’s biggest new native woodland could help stave off the worst effects of climate change, such as flooding.

First day on here.
I'll either be wittering about rugby or nature. If anyone wants to talk about woodland creation, then I can waffle away happily.

Also occasional pics of the dog.
