Don’t entirely disagree, but worth reading Holly Smith’s brilliant new book on the history of high rise - particularly the chapter on Park Hill. Didn’t always go entirely well…

Sure, an incredibly successful bid to shrink what the state did itself, but those things (temp accommodation, mental health services, school transport, etc) are now just provided by private companies / charities…and the state still pays for them! That’s what’s so so mad about it all

Hi Amara - this looks really interesting….currently in the process of setting up a journal club with a colleague in local authority context (on health inequalities / wider determinants ). Don’t suppose I could pick your brains at some point ?

Yeah, fair enough, but surely that’s not…too tricky? I mean, not my area at all, but presumably a lot simpler than needing a series of rooms to store files for certain cases, back in the day (needing index systems etc) ?

I remember reading that at the time!

To be fair, you should see the training that public sector employees get on ‘law’ - mine was full of errors, mention of administrative law tests that don’t exist, etc

…and ensuring that senior officials can communicate with counterparts at the same level of seniority !

…and then have to regularly follow up in the same way that you or I might if we got in touch with the police. That’s not to say that PCs aren’t capable (although…) but it’s more a question of recognising and giving due consideration to other forms of authority…
