Different developers did it different ways, too. I was almost entirely subjective takes from an unreliable narrator with Vampire, while other line developers took a more objective approach.

Yeah, man, when I did my stint on WoD5, I went in there with a cleaver. A significant amount of customer research showed that one of the biggest barriers to entry was feeling like having to know 30 years of what’s been going on. We used to call it the “wall of green marble” back in the Atlanta days.

Especially as players take different courses of action during the game and achieve different resolutions and endings. Your point about “opportunity to influence” is pivotal there, as the interactive nature of games is part of what makes them different from linear media like film/ novels/ etc.
