A PhD position has opened up in my old lab group in Uppsala with Anna Qvarnström! I can't recommend Uppsala and the group highly enough. This is a really great opportunity! If anyone wants to learn more about life in Uppsala or in the department, I'm very happy to talk.

I bought my 4yo niece 'The Ugly Five' by Julia Donaldson (of The Gruffalo fame) for Christmas and it has turned into her favourite book.
My little ornithologist heart swelled two sizes when I heard her talking about Lappet-faced Vultures and Marabou Storks today ❤️❤️

This is a female Collared Flycatcher that I caught in Sweden back in May. This one was especially exciting for me because she was the first bird I've caught wearing a foreign ring. In this case, from Malta!

"Darling, don't be silly now. I really don't think you to be given further credit. Really, you're getting rather emotional, don't you know?".
The sentence in this paper really is a classic of the genre! Neither of these women are named or credited beyond this.

10 years ago today I was doing field work in southern Peru and we caught probably the most spectacular bird I will ever have the privilege of holding. This Rufous-vented Ground Cuckoo Neomorphus geoffroyi is a mythical bird for most birders and one of the hardest species to see in the Amazon. 🧪🦉

This male Collared Flycatcher is one of several this year that is a bigamist. I.e. he is holding down two territories and raising two nests of chicks! There are always a few each year that do this. This one's nests are almost 1km apart from each other, which is pretty far for them! 🧪🪶🌏

We have an answer! She was ringed near Mtahleb, on the West Coast of Malta on the 14th of April!
She laid her first egg on the 16th of May, so she didn't hang around!

I'm ecstatic! For the first time in 10 years of flycatcher fieldwork, I've had a bird wearing a foreign ring! This female Collared Flycatcher was ringed in Malta!! I can't wait to find out her details!!

We sometimes find Brown Long-eared Bats using our bird boxes on Öland, but this is the first time I can remember finding a Pipistrelle. I have no idea if it is identifiable down to the species level from this photo, if anyone can ID it, let me know!

Unfortunately today in Asturias it is neither not too hot or not too cold. It's rather too cold.

Ah, what a question!
I think right now it would be this. However, ask me tomorrow and my answer might well be different...
