Listen to this American still working 40 hours a week when he's 88 because his wife got sick and he had to sell his house.

This is what they want to do in the UK.

Can you imagine YOUR city like this? Why not, more to the point.

All road deaths are a decision made at all levels of Government, within the courts, and to a large extent within the manufacturing of cars and the marketing of them. It doesn't have to be this way.
“Helsinki hasn’t registered a single traffic-related fatality in the past year…Citing data that shows the risk of pedestrian fatality is cut in half by reducing a car’s speed from 40 to 30km/hr, city officials imposed the lower limit in most of Helsinki’s residential areas & city center in 2021.”
Helsinki just went a full year without a single traffic death
The capital city is Finnish’ed with car-related fatalities.

When it comes to designing cities for biking and walking, Ghent Belgium may still not be as well known as Copenhagen, Amsterdam or Paris yet, but it’s one of the most inspiring cities in the world. I was honoured to do some work with them in 2019. Watch @streetfilms.bsky.social’s fantastic video:

Does your council give preferential treatment to children being driven to school by providing a 20mph limit "just outside schools" so leaving those walking or cycling the whole way from home to school in a 30mph street environment where any mistake may cause death or injury?

Boris Johnson today labelled former Education Secretary Gavin Williamson’s efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic ‘heroic.’ There are many words I could use to describe it, but that certainly is not one of them.

Sadly the current right-wing coalition government in Finland has cut the funding for the nation’s “Housing First” success story, & homelessness is now on the rise again. That just reinforces the fact that such programs work, if political ideology doesn’t stand in the way.

Is there a secret committee that has decided that #Farage should be given massive air time on main British TV Channels?

There is virtually NO Regulation, in contrast to France where plurality is guaranteed.

If compulsory plurality had been enacted there would have been no Brexit.

I haven’t seen it illustrated like this before. Very effective messaging. Of course it actually depends a lot on how fast the vehicle’s being driven, how big the vehicle is and how it’s designed, and how small the victims (too often kids) are. Via @yegbike.bsky.social #SpeedKills #CarBloat

I’m not saying that your city could do this. But it certainly should put your city’s culture of action, or lack thereof, into some perspective.

Is your city a city of action, or a city of excuse?

We have done further analysis on the Welsh urban/village casualty data going back 20 years. By charting the annual %age change from the previous year it shows that, apart from Covid, the 28% reduction after implementing the default 20mph in 23/24 is exceptional. #20splenty

Your regular reminder Delft’s market square was a surface parking lot as recently as 2004.

A razor-thin coalition (19-18 votes) initiated a six-month pilot to help merchants realize cars don’t spend money, people do.

Years later, no one remembers the controversy or regrets the decision. *Sound on*

One of the most successful pedestrian streets in the world, the Strøget in Copenhagen, was filled with cars until a 2 year pedestrianization pilot project in 1962. The opposition argued “no cars means no business,” but the street has been a massive retail success, the city’s busiest shopping street.

A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, and most of the energy that does, moves the car, not the people.

Sound efficient?

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people.

Good trade.
