It can provide diagnostic information in some pathologies like retinal degeneration and various tumours.
As cool as this is, it does pose challenges when using #fluorescent #microscopy to explore the #brain.

Or maybe there is some interesting information lying in these glowing patterns? 👀

In the images below, the human caudate/putamen was stained only for DAPI (nuclear dye shown in 🟦), all the other colours come from autofluorescence.

This natural glow is called #autofluorescence and various molecules contribute to it (metabolism - related, components of extracellular matrix...). With age our tissues also accumulate lipofuscins, which are a jumble of metals, misfolded proteins and oxidised lipids, that fluoresce !
