Robinson: I've been doing what I've been doing for a very long time. I have never encountered any asperity, any rudeness. I have found that if I satisfy what I think are reasonable standards of intellectual rigor, I can get on in the world perfectly well. We were talking about fear before, and many people who are Christian, they will say: Weren't you afraid? Weren't you afraid to write a book like that? Weren't you afraid that you would be ridiculed by professors or something? I did the thing I wanted to do. I never encountered any punitive response in the outside world. If you're polite and reasonable, you can very much go against the grain, and nobody is going to say boo.

When you have a baby in DC, the official forms start with a little bureaucratic poem, which ends: “Your data help shape your city.”

DC has shaped us far more than we have shaped it. Our new baby resident deserves equality under the law. Thanks to @freedcproject.bsky.social and those marching.

this was our choir director’s Holy Week “pep talk” (borrowed in turn from someone else) but it’s pretty good advice generally
A few thoughts during this busy and most sacred week. - Get lots of rest and eat and drink enough to sustain your energy. - Stretch. Wear comfortable shoes. - If you have a job to do in church, do that job or task. Don't worry about someone else's job. - This week calls for hours of elite musical performance usually offered by a handful of volunteer singers and musicians. Be kind and charitable. - If you're leading the singing, the musicians will make mistakes. Forgive early and often and ask forgiveness for your errors. - Don't compare your parish's services with those streamed online. Be thankful for the people God has gathered in your community. - Smile. - The entire week is a celebration of what God has done for us. There is nothing you can do to match God's efforts. Be thankful and think about how you can bear witness to incomparable love in your life and community. - Welcome visitors. - You're a person and a Christian outside of church. Take a walk. Plant something. Do a load of laundry. Play with your kids. Hug your spouse. Read a book. Be light in every activity. - Consider the old-timers at your parish. They have seen many Holy Weeks and Paschas. Watch them and, if opportunity permits, ask them to share their memories of past holidays. - Keep an eye out for lonely people. Holidays can be painful for many mourning the loss of loved ones. Even a quick hello with a smile can go a long way. - When it's time to feast, dig in - but remember that you will eat again tomorrow. So don't make yourself sick. - This life of yours - short, intense, and most precious - is finite. God created you to live for eternity. Make the most of this life.
